Consistent Contradiction

Wow. I guess your humanities class wasn't very good? Logic and critical reasoning are the domain of philosophy, one of those humanities disciplines. Most business majors and engineering majors are not logical and cannot argue well. But THEY BELIEVE coming into the class that they are rational (they can't define that) and connected to absolute truth (showing they need to take more philosophy). They are convinced that I'm forcing them to read and discuss a bunch of arcane crap that is all a matter of opinion anyway. It's only after I work with them for a while that they realize that, while we argue about different theories in humanities classes, there are standards of argument, and some arguments are better supported than others. I teach them what faulty generalizations are, what valid arguments look like, and how to assess and critique ideological bias. Lack of good faith material? I think my heart just broke.

But hell, you got me writing now, didn't you? Thanks for the intriguing essay!
